Curriculum Requirements

This concentration prepares students for the workforce, graduate schools, and professional schools.  A 2.0 or better GPA must be maintained as the overall GPA as well as in all English courses.

1. 124 Semester Hours:

Complete a maximum of 124 semester hours with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better.  The last 30 hours must be completed at NCCU.  Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in the following courses:  ENG 1110 , ENG 1210 , ENG 1300  or ENG 1400 , and ENG 1500 .

2. General Education Requirement:

Complete General Education Curriculum  required by the university as detailed on the four-year course of study.

Three to five of the literature electives may be chosen from the following list:

1. ENG 2310 British Literature I  (3) or ENG 2320 British Literature II  (3) (whichever was not taken as a Core requirement)

2. ENG 3310 American Literature I  (3) or ENG 3320 American Literature II  (3) (whichever was not taken as a Core requirement)

3. ENG 3410 African American Literature I  (3) or ENG 3420 African American Literature II  (3) (whichever was not taken as a Core requirement)

4. ENG 2340 Contemporary African American Literature (3), ENG 2350 Studies in English Literature  (3), ENG 3505 Women and Literature  (3), or ENG 3605 Contemporary Literature  (3) (if not already taken to fulfill Literature Concentration hours)

5. ENG 4000 The History of the English Language  (3), ENG 4200 Modern African Literature  (3), ENG 4700 Twentieth-Century British Literature (3), or a 2^nd Novel elective, or a 2^nd Drama elective

Up to two of the literature electives may be chosen from the following list.

ENG 2720 Introduction to Creative Writing  (3) or any other English course (not listed above at the 3000 or 4000 level.)
