The mission of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is to provide students with a rigorous and stimulating educational environment so that they develop the knowledge and professional skills in chemistry and chemistry-related disciplines that will enable them to enter the workforce and or further their education in a graduate or professional school of choice.
The courses are arranged to address needs of students intending to enter such professions as chemistry, engineering, pharmacy, medicine, forensics, dentistry, biotechnology, nursing, and science teaching, as well as to prepare graduates to serve as chemists and chemical scientists.
Students preparing for entrance to pharmacy, medical, or dental programs must consult with an advisor to assure completion of minimum requirements for admission to the professional programs of their choice.
Proficiency in College Algebra must be demonstrated by either passage of the Mathematics Placement Exam given upon entrance to the university of by a grade of “C” or better in MATH 1100 and MATH 1200 , respectively, for enrollment in CHEM 1100 and CHEM 1200 . Proficiency in MATH 2020 must be demonstrated by a grade of “C” or better for enrollment in CHEM 4010 .
Requirements for a Second Baccalaureate Degree
The Chemistry Department offers the “2nd degree in Chemistry” program of study to those students possessing a prior baccalaureate degree. A minimum of 30 semester hours must be earned in the second degree program. Since cases may be different, prospective candidates should contact the departmental chairperson at (919) 530-6351 for a detailed discussion and evaluation.
