Curriculum Requirements
The Music Education Concentration provides students with the knowledge and skills required to teach K-12 school music, along with coursework required by North Carolina Department of Education for Music K-12 licensure. Separate tracks for instrumentals and vocalists are offered.
Instrumental or vocal audition required by Department of Music for degree program acceptance.
1. 120 Semester Hours:
Complete a minimum of 120 semester hours with a cumulative grade point average of 2.7 or better. The last 30 hours must be completed at NCCU. Students must repeat ‘D’ and ‘F’ grades in major courses.
2. General Education Requirement:
Complete General Education Curriculum required by the university as detailed on the four-year course of study.

5. Additional Requirements
Senior recital required with seventh semester of applied instruction (APPL 0XX1). Application for and acceptance in Teacher Education Program (TEP) required for enrollment in MUSL 3530 , MUSL 3560 , EDU 4118 , and EDU 4218 . PRAXIS II required for TEP.
Program Notes:
Major Ensembles for Music Education include: Marching Band; Symphonic Band; University Choir; Jazz Ensemble; Vocal Jazz Ensemble; String Ensemble (orchestral string majors); Guitar Ensemble (guitar majors); Percussion Ensemble (percussion majors as assigned by applied instructor).
1. Students should take the Praxis I between 1st semester freshman year and 2nd semester sophomore year. A passing Praxis I score, or the equivalent is required for admission into the Teacher Education Program (TEP). If the student has taken the SAT or ACT, they may be able to use those scores as equivalents to a passing Praxis 1 score.
2. EDU 3150 Instructional Planning (=MUSL 3530 ) & EDU 3170 (=MUSL 3560 ) Assessment of Learning require TEP Admission.
3. EDU 4118 Methods and Materials in Music and EDU 4218 Directed Teaching of Music required the passing of the Praxis II test with an equivalent score of 162. Students should take the Praxis II between 2nd semester Junior year and 2nd semester Senior year.
4. EDU 3000 Intro to Education Psychology, EDU 3005 Educational Psychology and Human Development , and EDU 3120 Inclusive Teaching for Students with Special Needs do not require TEP Admission.
5. EDU 3005 replaces EDU 3000 and EDU 3010 as of Fall 2022.
