Educational Technology, M.A.

Overview

The graduate program in Educational Technology, a 36 credit hour program, offers courses leading to the Master of Arts degree with two program concentrations:   (1) Instructional Technology and (2) Online Instructional Design. The degree offers two delivery strands: (1) Online with synchronous and asynchronous delivered courses and (2) Campus.

The Instructional Technology Concentration (licensure) focuses on preparing candidates to become practitioners of digital content and learning technologies in K-12 settings. This concentration requires an “A” or “M” teaching license on upon program entry, the completion of a practicum, and an e-portfolio presentation and defense upon program exit. Candidates completing the program will qualify for a North Carolina Department of Public Instruction 88077 - Instructional Technology Specialist Computer License and a North Carolina Department of Public Instruction 88079 - Technology Endorsement. Candidates must apply to the Department of Public Instruction for their license. Candidates completing the program will serve as educators in the K-12 setting, in positions including teachers, technology facilitators, technology coordinators, technology teacher, and technology directors.   

The Online Instructional Design concentration focuses on current and dynamic technology and prepares candidates for both educational and non-educational settings. The Online Instructional Design concentration is designed from an educational perspective to create experts in the discipline of learning technologies and online delivery with expertise to develop, create, implement, and evaluate digital content and learning technologies.  

I. Admission Requirements


  1. A bachelor’s degree from a recognized or accredited institution;
  2. A minimum 2.75 GPA overall at the undergraduate level. Prospective candidates with a GPA between 2.5 and 2.749 must earn a minimum grade point average of 2.75 or a 3.0 average for the last four semesters of study for the bachelor’s degree;
  3. A copy of a valid NCDPI teaching license for candidates seeking 88079 and 88077 certifications;
  4. Two letters of recommendation submitted by persons who are knowledgeable about the candidate’s teaching or work experience, who have worked in a supervisory role with the applicant, and who have direct knowledge of the applicant’s teaching skills;
  5. A personal interview with members of the Educational Technology Program and Curriculum and Instruction faculty;
  6. A writing sample indicating the applicant’s ability to write in a clear, concise, and professional manner. The writing sample will be taken from the applicant’s statements of intent and interest from the Graduate Application.  The School of Education’s mission is to prepare educators for diverse cultural contexts. Please ensure that your writing sample demonstrates how you and your work fit into such a description. Your writing sample should also exemplify the experiences or values in your life that match this philosophy;

Electives - 12 hours


M.A. with Thesis Option - 6 hours


Total Credits - 42 hours


III. Exit Requirements


  1. Completion of 36 credits hours. Candidates with a first master’s degree are required to complete a minimum of 27 credit hours.
  2. A passing grade of “B’ or higher with no more than one grade of “C” in all courses attempted.
  3. Successful completion of a 3-credit hour practicum/internship;
  4. Successful presentation and defense of the e-portfolio. Candidates in the online program will present and defend the e-portfolio via video conferencing mode. Online candidates with approval of the program coordinator may choose to present their portfolio on campus;
  5. Successful completion of a comprehensive examination. Candidates in the online program may take the comprehensive examination at approved proctoring sites or may choose to take the comprehensive examination on campus.
