The Department of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program. Graduates of the Traditional, Veterans and Accelerated BSN program tracks may apply to write the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) for registered nurses. The nursing program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

 

The program curriculum nine semesters, with the last five semesters focused on nursing.  The first four semesters include courses to provide knowledge in the natural sciences, mathematics, social sciences, humanities and the pre-nursing courses.  The baccalaureate program establishes the basis for entry into professional practice as well as graduate study in nursing.

 

The purpose of the nursing program is to provide the knowledge and skills needed to function as a professional nurse in a variety of health care settings. Throughout the curriculum the student will address and integrate competencies for professional nursing practice including critical thinking, decision making, communication, leadership, and technology proficiency to respond to changing needs and evolving environments of today’s health care settings. There are four tracks in the BSN program.

 

The Accelerated BSN program (completion in 14 months of nursing courses) is open to students who have completed an undergraduate four year degree in another discipline and who meet criteria for admission. Students in the Traditional Track are first-time or transfer college students. The Veterans BSN provides an opportunity for students with military experience with medical or health experience, to enroll in the nursing program with potential for accelerating courses based upon military training and medical skills. The RN-BSN track admits registered nurses who are graduates of associate degree or diploma programs. The RN-BSN nursing option was ranked #17 in the nation for the best on-line nursing option.
