EDU 4060 - Language and Culture (3) This course is designed to address the importance of language and how it is inextricably bound to identity, both as an instrumental tool for communication and as a carrier of cultural values and attitudes. This course focuses on the socio-cultural and linguistic aspects that shape and influence students’ identity. This course helps teachers develop: 1) an awareness and sensitivity to work effectively with students with diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds and 2) a commitment to intervene in social injustice as a means to closing the achievement gap. Therefore, a strong emphasis on the content on cultural and linguistic diversity is a necessary prerequisite to preparing teachers to serve the needs of students whose first language is not English and who are from diverse cultural backgrounds.
