Recreation Administration, Parks and Recreation Management Concentration[PRM], B.S.

Curriculum Requirements

This option is designed for those students who are interested in the management of recreation and leisure service agencies, designing activities in Sport Programs, Special Events, Social Programs, and Cultural Programs, which provides opportunities for individuality, creativity, and self-expression in the following areas:  Art, Dance, Drama, Experiential, Intellectual, and Music.  This option culminates in a 10 week/400-hour internship, a practical work experience at an approved site with expert supervision.  Through this experience, students gain managerial and administrative skills as well as valuable contacts for future employment.  The course of study provides students with the prerequisite knowledge necessary to pass the National Recreation and Parks Association Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) Examination.

1. 120 Credit Hours:

Complete a minimum of 120 semester hours with a cumulative grade point average of 2.25 or better.  The last 30 hours must be completed at NCCU.  Students must repeat ‘D’ and ‘F’ courses in major and non-departmental required courses.

2. General Education Requirement:

Freshman and sophomore years:  complete General Education Curriculum  (GEC) required by the university as detailed on the four-year course of study. Students should take the GEC courses by the end of the Sophomore year.  Students must have a ‘C’ or better in ENG 1110 , ENG 1210 , MATH 1110 , and PSY 2100 .

• Parks and Recreation Cognate Courses; students (with advisor permission) are to select (18) credit hours from the following three cognate areas:  Management, Policy, and Social/Community.

Program Notes:

Students who wish to major in the Recreation Administration program must have an overall grade point average of 2.25.  Students must have taken RECR 1000   and RECR 2120   before registering in upper level courses.  Students must be senior status, have permission of their advisor, and completed RECR 4625   prior to internship enrolling in RECR 4630  . Students must be in good standing and have passed all required courses prior to internship placement, which consists of a minimum of 400-hour, 10 consecutive week experience in recreation/leisure service agency.
