Graduate programs in School Counseling, Community Agency Counseling, and Career Counseling offer courses leading to the Master of Arts degree in Counselor Education. The Department of Counselor Education at North Carolina Central University prepares career, community agency, and school counselors to work with children and adults in a variety of settings. Counselor-trainees are prepared to work in rural and urban settings. The primary focus of the department is to prepare professional counselors who can promote human growth and development in rural and urban settings. To this end, the department emphasizes increasing awareness, knowledge, and skills in interacting with economically, socially, and culturally diverse populations. The department makes an intentional effort to serve a diverse group of students (diverse across race, gender, age, and ethnicity). A major emphasis of the training is on clinical experiences in partnership with local agencies and schools. These partnerships foster an understanding of multicultural and diverse populations and mastering counseling techniques that promote their empowerment in rural and urban settings. The department aims to develop professional counselors who are agency leaders and advocates for systemic change. Faculty in the department are expected to teach, mentor, provide service to the community, present at local and national conferences, and conduct program-relevant research.

The graduate program in Career Counseling is designed to prepare counselors to assist clients in career exploration, career decision-making and career development. Graduates are prepared to work in college and university placement centers, business or industrial personnel offices, and private employment or career centers. The graduate program in Community Agency Counseling is designed to give adequate breadth and depth of training to prepare counselors competent to perform counseling activities in the community. Graduates are prepared to work in agencies such as social services, rehabilitation programs, mental health centers, substance abuse treatment facilities, correctional institutions, and crisis centers. Students who complete the program are eligible for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor in North Carolina after obtaining a passing score on the Professional Counselor Exam and completing the required hours of supervised experience.

Letters of recommendation prepared by the department’s faculty members will indicate the program in which each student was enrolled (i.e., career counseling, community agency counseling, school counseling or rehabilitation counseling) and will describe the nature of the internship which the individual completed (i.e., setting, population served). In addition, program faculty will only recommend individuals for licenses and certificates for which they are qualified by having met the requisite standards.
