	HIST 2310 - History of Hip Hop (Comprehensive) (3) Prerequisites: HIST 1540 The Black Experience Since 1865 or HIST 3520 African American History Since 1865 or SOCI 2300 Social Problems . HIST 1540 The Black Experience Since 1865 and SOCI 2300 Social Problems can be taken by Freshmen and Sophomores and is part of the GEC course requirement for Social Science. The course HIST 3520 African American History Since 1865 can be taken by Juniors and Seniors as an upper level course. Hip Hop History examines the cultural phenomenon through its development, history, communication style, dance form, music, and artistic process. Throughout the course students will explore the dynamics of race, gender, youth, and class. 	HIST 2320 - History of Hip Hop (Audio) (3) Prerequisites: HIST 2310 History of Hip Hop (Comprehensive) and HIST 1540 The Black Experience Since 1865 or SOCI 2300 Social Problems . Hip Hop: In Deep Concentration studies the most heralded artists, their lives, and their classic works. Throughout the course students will become more familiar on the impact these artists had on a growing culture. Students will be required to LISTEN and LIVE with the “classics”, by understanding how each classic affected youth culture and why it is deemed a “classic”. 	HIST 2420 - African History Since 1800 (3) A general survey of African developments since 1800, with a discussion of the dynamics of imperialism as they operated in Africa during the period of the partitioning and subsequent colonization, the rise of African nationalism, the process of decolonization, and the issues facing African states since independence. It is a survey of the rich variety and complex web of interrelated research activities activities that constitute the practice of public history; particular attention given to African Americans’ influence on the field. 	HIST 3072 - Women in the African Diaspora (3) This course is a comparative study of women in the African Diaspora. The course explores the sociocultural constructions of race and the processes of acculturation and resistance among people of African descent in the ‘New World’ and the ‘Old World’. We will focus on women in Africa and its Diaspora communities in the Caribbean, Latin America, and North America. Part of this course pays close attention to the leadership strategies of women in the African Diaspora providing opportunities for students to adapt these models for their personal development. 	HIST 3310 - Hip Hop in Global Perspective (3) Prerequisites: Completion of the following courses: HIST 1540 or HIST 3520 or SOCI 2300 . This course examines hip hop’s historical origin in the United States and its global spread to Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. We will explore how youth throughout the world increasingly draw on U.S. hip hop to address their own experiences of marginality, exploitation, and displacement, localizing the music in ways that create a multiplicity of models that complicate the cultural transmission of a global art form. 	HIST 3522 - The Black Female Body in American Culture (3) This course examines the constructions, representations, forms of appropriation and liberation of the Black female body in cross-cultural, historical and contemporary perspective. Particular attention will be given to examining ways that the intersecting hierarchies of gender, race, class, sexuality and culture shape the treatment of the Black female body. 	HIST 3523 - Black Feminist and Feminist Thought (3) The purpose of this course is to examine the history of Black feminist theory and scholarship. The course will explore topical areas in Black feminist and feminist scholarship. It pays particular attention to theoretical perspectives that examine local, national, and international topics that include: the social construction of gender and sexuality; definitions of womanhood; the female body and the politics of representation; comparative feminisms; women’s culture; political and economic expressions; and women’s activism and participation in social transformation will be included. 	HIST 3524 - Black Women and Activism (3) The purpose of this course is to highlight the multiple ways black women activists have shaped United States History. Through this course, students will explore and examine the struggles and accomplishments of Black women activists. The course also examines black women’s clubs, groups, and organizations in the hopes of creating a more accurate portrayal of the impact these individuals and groups have had on society. The second half of the course will enable students to see more clearly how black women served as critical agents in uplifting their communities, particularly during tremendous periods of interracial turmoil and heightened group tensions. 	HIST 3525 - Black Women and Slavery (3) The purpose of this course is to investigate African American women’s history during the colonial era to 1865. The principal focus of the course is to apply analytical frameworks of race, gender and class to understand the life cycles and multiple roles of women of African descent as mothers, daughters, wives, workers and social change agents. 	HIST 3527 - Black Women in the 20th Century (3) This course explores United States history by centering black women’s experiences within the study of African American and U.S. History. Using African American women’s history as its lens, the course also examines the intersection of race, class, and gender in American society. This course takes a chronological and thematic approach to the study of African American women from the dawn of the twentieth century to the present. Particular themes that will be explored include: the relationship between constructions of race, class and gender; productive and reproductive labor; women’s networks; migration; the gendered meaning of freedom, and issues facing black women in the twentieth century. 	HIST 3910 - South Asia Under British Imperial Rule, 1750-1885 (3) This course uses readings, lectures and films to focus on the British Empire in South Asia (i.e., India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal). It examines imperialism as a cultural, economic and political form of domination and emphasizes historical factors leading to its rise in South Asia. 	HIST 3920 - The Unmaking of the British Empire in India, 1885-1947 (3) This course addresses how India – a seemingly permanent British imperial possession – gained independence after the formation of the Indian National Congress 1885. 	HIST 4080 - Seminar in Public History (3) Prerequisites: HIST 2000 ,HIST 2890 ,HIST 4810 Seminar in Public History is an undergraduate research seminar that explores the nature and practice of Public History and the various methods and approaches and central to Public History research. Topical areas of research may include archives, museums, historic sites, national parks, monuments and memorials, memory, local history, community history, urban archeology, and applied history in business or government. Geographical areas of study may include the United States, Africa, the African Diaspora, Europe, or Asia. 	HIST 4640 - Homeland Security Theory, Policy and Practice (3) Pre- or Co-requisite: HLS 3000 , HLS 3500 , HLS 3200 This course will serve as a capstone course for the homeland security concentrations. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of theory, policy and practice in homeland security through their participation in a project that addresses a contemporary issue in homeland security. 	HIST 4900 - Teaching High School Social Studies (3) Prerequisites: EDU 2600 , EDU 3170 EDU 3150 with a grade of C or better Corequisites: EDU 4010 and EDU 3120 This course will serve as a pedagogical methods course for teacher-candidates prior to the start of their 16-week student-teaching practicum. This course will also serve as a pedagogical methods course for history majors (especially those wishing to pursue careers as history professors) who desire to learn methods of teaching outside of direct instruction (lecture). Furthermore, this course will address issues teachers of high school social studies face when dealing with such societal issues as tackling inherent discriminations that exist in the teaching of social studies topics and finding ways to teach social studies in any learning environment that faces depleted financial and educational resources. 	HIST 4940 - Fiction, Film and South Asia’s Past (cross-listed with English Department) (3) This course addresses how contemporary film and fiction represent South Asia’s past. It combines writings and films to analyze questions about society, economy and power in South Asia. 	HLS 3000 - Introduction to Homeland Security (3) This course is designed to introduce the student to the scope of issues facing the American public, the private sector and law enforcement on securing the country against threats posed by domestic and international terrorist groups. 	HLS 3200 - Emergency Management and Recovery (3) This course exposes students to emergency management, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. The course concentrates on the recovery phase, which involves bringing the affected area back to status quo ante, and explores how mitigation for the next event ties in with recovery. 	HLS 3500 - Infrastructure Protection (3) This course is designed to familiarize the student with the principles of Homeland Security infrastructure protection as outlined in presidential directives, executive orders and federal and state law, court opinions, regulations, policies, and procedures. 	HLS 3800 - Countering Violent Extremism in Rural Jails and Prisons (3) This course provides a background in threat group radicalization and recruitment tactics. It also presents information on how to gather, categorize, and develop plans for intervening in the recruitment and radicalization of new members for threat groups within the confines of rural jails and prisons. It focuses on rural correctional facilities as unique breeding grounds for threat group recruitment and radicalization, examines the processes by which recruitment and radicalization occur, and discusses methods for strengthening the information gathering and sharing process. 	HLS 4000 - Financial Investigations (3) This course will cover the background priorities and laws of the United States in fighting money laundering. Title 18 Sections 1956 and 1957 will be discussed, as well as the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (50 U.S.C. 170), the Patriot Act and other federal and United Nations acts. 	HLS 4200 - Transportation Security (3) This course will allow the student the ability to recognize some of the challenges facing transportation security and to formulate possible solutions to address these challenges. Students will examine current security responses by federal, state and local governments, as well as, private industry in the area of aviation, marine, highway and rail safety. 	HLS 4210 - Corporate/Private Security (3) This course teaches students the methods of securing the infrastructure of the United States. The student will have an understanding of all aspects of security, including the ability to identify threat elements to civil aviation operations, transportation, trains, rivers, bridges, and roads. Further, the student will be able to apply their knowledge to provide briefings regarding their independent research into the methods utilized in the infrastructure protection by private and corporate security. 	HLS 4500 - Homeland Security Law and Policy (3) Prerequisites: HADM 3000 . This course is designed to give the student an overview of homeland security law and policy. 	HLS 4640 - Homeland Security Theory, Policy and Practice (3) Prerequisites: HLS 3000 , HLS 3200 , HLS 3500 . This course will serve as a capstone course for the homeland security concentration. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of theory, policy and practice in homeland security through their participation in a project that addresses a contemporary issue in homeland security. 	HON 1200 - Honors Global Leadership Seminar (3) Pre- or Co-requisite: Admission into the University Honors Program. A course that is designed to refine the leadership skills of students as engaged global citizens and community leaders. Students examine leadership philosophies, principles, and lessons from leaders worldwide and throughout history, developing their leadership and communication skills through panel discussions, oral presentations, and peer projects addressing local and global issues.
