Minor in Earth Science

The Minor in Earth Science is a 19 credit hours program designed to provide students with basic knowledge of Earth Science processes as well as exposure to pressing global issues such as climate change, geohazards and sustainability of energy use and other natural resources.  The Minor in Earth Science compliments variety of educational and career paths, from other sciences to education, business, planning and emergency management.  For the Minor in Earth Science students are required to complete:  introductory level earth science courses in solid earth, atmosphere and ocean interactions (6 credit hours); upper level courses in climatology and natural resources (6 credit hours); applied courses in GIS and geohazards risk analysis (6 credit hours) and a seminar course (1 credit hour).

Students who have completed this minor will have demonstrated the ability to:  explain basic earth science concepts and processes, discuss interdependence of resources on one another, critically evaluate sources of earth science data and information, competently use electronic and traditional news media, create position papers on earth science related topics, use GIS software to analyze natural hazards and apply the knowledge and skills learned in this minor to solve or address problems in their major field of study.
