Recreation Administration, Recreational Sport Management Concentration with Sport Coaching, B.S.

Curriculum Requirements

To meet the needs of the recent growth in the sport industries, sport managers are in demand. This option, which includes either a minor in Business Administration or Sport Coaching, prepares students for career opportunities in sport fitness facilities, professional and collegiate sport teams, exercise and fitness/swim/golf/racquet clubs, municipal/high school/college/corporate/commercial intramurals and sport clubs, sport information, public/nonprofit/private sport agencies, and marketing sporting goods. This option culminates in a 10 week/400-hour internship, a practical work experience at an approved site with expert supervision. Through this experience, students gain managerial and administrative skills as well as valuable contacts for future employment. The course of study provides students with the prerequisite knowledge necessary to pass the National Recreation and Parks Association Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) Examination.

1. 120 Semester Hours:

Complete a minimum of 120 semester hours with a cumulative grade point average of 2.25 or better. The last 30 hours must be completed at NCCU. Students must repeat ‘D’ and ‘F’ courses in major and non-departmental required courses.

2. General Education Requirement:

Freshman and sophomore years: complete General Education Curriculum  (GEC) required by the university as detailed on the four-year course of study. Students should complete the GEC courses by the end of the Sophomore year. Students must have a ‘C’ or better in ENG 1110 , ENG 1210 , MATH 1110 , and PSY 2100 .

Program Notes:

Students who wish to major in the Recreation Administration Program must have an overall grade point average of 2.25 and apply to be admitted into the program. Applicants must be at least a sophomore and have completed the following courses: RECR 1000 , RECR 2120 , and one additional 2000 level RECR course with a GPA average of 2.25 or better. Students are required to be senior status, have permission of their advisor, and have completed RECR 4625  prior to enrolling in the RECR 4630 . Students must be in good standing and have passed all required courses prior to internship placement, which consists of a minimum 400-hour, 10 consecutive week field placement experience in recreation/leisure service agency.
