Curriculum Requirements


Kinesiology: Physical Education K-12 Teaching Licensure Program (PETE)

The Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) in its revised form requires that all undergraduate majors meet the Education Preparation Program’s criteria.The Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) program is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI).

1. 120 semester hours:


Complete a minimum of 120 semester hours with a cumulative grade point average of 2.7 (Effective from July 1, 2017). The last 30 hours must be completed at NCCU.

2. General Education Requirement:


Freshmen and sophomore years: complete the General Education Curriculum  as detailed on the four-year course of study with a minimum grade of “C” in the ENG 1110  , ENG 1210  , and  MSCM 1250  ; BIOL 1610  ,MATH 1100  or MATH 1110  . Placement test scores may require enrollment in lower level courses in English, Math, Reading, and Foreign Language. The lower level courses must be passed prior to enrollment in the General Education Curriculum courses listed on the four-year course of study.

6. Formal Admission To Educational Preparation Program


Meet the Education Preparation Program (EPP) requirements for admission to the Teacher Education Program:

  • Pass the Praxis Core Academics Test during the last semester of the
  • Sophomore year and be admitted to the Teacher Education Program
  • Achieve a minimum grade point average of 2.7 (effective from July 1, 2017)
  • Achieve a minimum grade of “C” in   ENG 1110   , ENG 1210  , and MSCM 1250  

Program Notes:


Teacher Education candidates may not enroll in restricted courses prior to admission to the Teacher Education Program in accordance with NCDPI policy. Those courses include the following:

Many courses listed in the first year of this plan are specific to this degree program and may not fulfill degree requirements for other programs at the University. Students are advised that changing their program of study from this major to another major, after the first year, can extend the time until graduation by a semester or more.

< Students must take and pass PRAXIS I during the Sophomore year to be admitted to the Teacher Education Program. Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA or better to stay in the program and for admission to Teacher Education Program. Teacher Education Candidates cannot enroll in restricted courses prior to admission -  PETE 4450 EDU 3150 ,PETE 4400 PETE 4600 

> Students must receive a “C” or better in all English, major and minor courses.
