OVERVIEW
The Family and Consumer Sciences, concentration Human Development & Family Studies (HDFS) acquire a broad knowledge of preparing students for working with individuals, families, and communities through the study of infancy, childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, later adulthood, and aging.
Coursework prepares students to work in a variety of settings ranging from local organizations, to non-profit, to government agencies. The concentration requires 36 graduate credits and offers a thesis and non-thesis (internship) option.
I. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

A bachelor’s degree from a recognized or accredited institution; A minimum 3.0 GPA overall at the undergraduate level. Prospective candidates with a GPA lower than 3.0 can be granted conditional admission but must earn a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on their first 9 credit hours of study to be granted regular admission to the graduate school.

Two letters of recommendation submitted by persons who are knowledgeable about the candidate’s abilities, who have worked in a supervisory role with the applicant and have direct knowledge of the applicant’s leadership skills.

Professional Core - 12 hours
HDFS Concentration Courses - 15 hours
Cognate/Electives - 6 hours
Students are to take 6 hours of graduate-level elective courses, which can be in other graduate departments.
Non-Thesis Option (Internship) - 3 hours
Total Credit Hours in HDFS Concentration - 36 hours
Exit Requirements
- A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
- Successful completion of 36 credit hours.
- Successful completion of a written Comprehensive Examination 80% minimum is required.
- Successful completion of internship or thesis project, including passing an oral exam is required.
