MS in Kinesiology and Recreation Administration

The Department of Kinesiology and Recreation Administration offers a Master of Science Degree in Kinesiology and Recreation. Concentrations include Athletic Administration, Physical Education Teacher Education, Adapted Sports, Recreation Management, and Recreation Therapy. These concentrations provide a comprehensive graduate education, scholarship, and independent research. The concentrations are also designed to provide advanced study in teaching, learning, curriculum development, and leadership.

Admission Requirements


Perspective students interested in the Master of Science in Kinesiology and Recreation should hold a baccalaureate degree in a related field from an accredited institution. GRE scores are NOT REQUIRED. Applicants for admission to the graduate program in kinesiology and recreation must follow the NCCU Graduate School admission procedures.

Students interested in the Master of Science in Physical Education Teacher Education Concentration must have earned an undergraduate degree in Physical Education from an institution of higher education accredited by a regional association.

Students seeking the Master of Science in the Physical Education Teacher Education Concentration must also have the North Carolina “A” license or the equivalent from another state.

Depending on which Exit Option students choose, the number of electives will vary. Students will be required to take the number of elective courses needed to reach 33 (Thesis Option) or 33 (Non-Thesis Option) credit hours. With the approval of their advisor, students may select elective courses not listed below. Note: Some of these courses are offered once every four semesters and some are offered every other semester. Students should check with the graduate coordinator to assess availability of these approved courses.

IV. Exit Requirements

Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher is required. Students must complete a minimum of 33 hours of coursework including a Thesis for the M.S. with Thesis option, a minimum of 33 hours of coursework including a Project for the M.S. with Project option, and a minimum of 33 hours of coursework including a 6 credit hour internship for the M.S. with Internship option.
