Either as part of the MLS degree program with a specialization as a School Media Coordinator or following granting of the MLS degree, students may complete requirements to obtain certification from the NC Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) as a school library media coordinator.  The SLIS program meets the professional standards required to work in NC public schools as well as national standards from the ALA/AASL (American Library Association/American Association of School Librarians).  The certification program is designed to support librarians who love to work with children and young adults and who want to teach reading, literacy, workshops or small courses in literature, and research to students from grades K-12.  A total of 39 hours are required.  The core MLS courses are enhanced by classes in Children’s or Adolescent Resources and Services, and Family and Community Relations.  In addition, graduate students in the program investigate research methods, apply measurements and evaluations of learning, and practice using current tools and technologies in the 21st century educational environment.  Certification students use the latest social media, film, audio, and learning devices.  Before finishing the certification program, students must complete a practicum in a school library and apply what they have learned under the supervision of an experienced school librarian.  Ideas for book clubs, science projects, maker space creations, 3-D printing, community outreach, and collaborations that build on the creative minds of children and young adults may be applied and tested.  School librarians are on the leading edge of any public school curriculum and help to ensure the success of young leaders in all grades.  Basic understanding of the learning process and philosophies behind curriculum design are part of the School Librarian/School Media Coordinator program and courses required for certification.  Where else can those who love education improve learning in NC and worldwide wherever they may work, including international assignments, military base schools, and remote village academies?  This certification can be a stepping stone to a rewarding career in education and librarianship.  See also the Joint Educational Technology/Information Science Degree Program for additional opportunities in School Media and Instructional Technology graduate education with a MA-MIS dual degree.
