I. Admission Requirements


For unconditional admission to the graduate program, the student must present at least 30 semester hours of “B” work in Mathematics and Computer Science, including full sequence of calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. Students who do not meet these requirements may gain conditional admission with a plan to complete a course of study to rectify any deficiencies within one semester of admission into the program.

II. Program Requirements


Electives - 15 hours


15 semester hours chosen from any MATG offering, except MATG 5900 .

Thesis Option - 3-6 hours


Non-Thesis Option (Pure and Applied Mathematics Only) - 9 hours


  • Nine (9) semester hours selected from MATG offering, except MATG 5900 .  
  •  
  • Successful completion of a four-part comprehensive written examination.  Four of the following five areas will be represented on the exam:  Probability and Statistics, Analysis, Algebra, Geometry, Applied Mathematics.  A student can be exempted from one, but only one, part of the exam by obtaining two A’s in an area.

Computer Programming Language or Statistic Requirements - 0-3 hours


Successful completion of an examination in statistical concepts, or demonstration of proficiency in a modern computer programming language or completion of an approved graduate statistics course

Total credit Hours for all Concentrations - 30-36 hours


III. Exit Requirements


  1. A minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate mathematics courses with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  2. Successful completion of a comprehensive written examination.
  3. Successful completion of an oral examination associated with the thesis.
