OVERVIEW
The Department of History offers the Master of Arts degree in history, with concentrations in African history, African American history, European history, Latin American history, Public history, and United States history.
Students develop expertise in writing, researching, and analyzing historical change. The program prepares students for careers in secondary and higher education, government, the law, and business. Many M.A. graduates pursue further study at doctoral programs in history.
I. Admission Requirements
- Official transcripts of the student’s academic record from all institutions of higher education attended (undergraduate and graduate)
- Two completed Applicant Recommendations from two different individuals familiar with the applicant’s academic work.
- The applicant’s statement of purpose (included in the graduate application form)
- A 3 page writing sample (review of a history book) demonstrating the applicant’s ability to write a historical analysis.
II. Program Requirements
A. Thesis Option
Students must declare their intention to pursue either the Thesis Option or the Nonthesis Option by the beginning of their second semester in the graduate program.
Core Courses - 6 hours
Elective Courses - 21 hours
Course electives may be selected from any graduate history course (HISG 5000 level)
Thesis - 3-6 hours
Total Credit Hours - 30-33 hours
Exit Requirements
- Completion of 27 credit hours of course work with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
- Successful completion of SPAN 5000 or successful completion of reading proficiency examination in a foreign language.
- Successful completion of a comprehensive written examination.
- Successful completion of a thesis (3-6 credit hours) and of the oral examination in defense of that thesis.
B. Nonthesis Option
Students nust declare their intention to pursue either the thesis option or the Nonthesis Option by the beginning of their second semester in their graduate program.
Core Courses - 9 hours
Elective Courses in History 21 Hours
Course electives may be selected from any graduate history courses ( HISG 5000 level)
Project - 3-6 hours
The project may be an online or a museum exhibit, or a digital history project.
Total Credit Hours - 33-36 hours
Exit Requirements
- Completion of 30 credit hours of course work with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
- Successful completion of SPAN 5000 or successful completion of a reading proficiency examination in a foreign lanuage.
- Successful completion of a comprehensive written examination.
- Successful comletion of a project (3-6 credit hours) and of the oral examination in defense of that project.
