The Department of Nursing offers three options leading to the Bachelor of Science of Nursing (BSN): Traditional BSN, Accelerated BSN, and RN-BSN. The nursing program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

The Traditional BSN option is offered to qualified high school graduates, transfer, and licensed practical nurses. It is also an option for those seeking a second undergraduate degree that have below a 3.2 cumulative GPA.  All applicants are required to have:

• 3.2 Math and Science GPA or higher, with no more than 2 failures in math or science courses. At the third failure students are ineligible to apply to nursing. Math/Science courses must have been taken within 5 years prior to starting Nursing courses
• 3.2 cumulative GPA at NC Central University or higher
• Meet the Departmental benchmark for ATI TEAS exam. The exam evaluates student’s math, science, reading, English, and language skills.

The Accelerated BSN option is offered to students who have completed a bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution. This option is completed in less than a year and a half. All applicants are required to have:

• 3.2 Math and Science GPA or higher, with no more than 2 failures in math or science courses. At the third failure students are ineligible to apply to nursing. Math/Science courses must have been taken within 5 years prior to starting Nursing courses
• 3.2 cumulative GPA at NC Central University or higher
• Meet the Departmental benchmark for ATI TEAS exam. The exam evaluates student’s math, science, reading, English, and language skills.

The RN-BSN option is offered to registered nurses leading to a BSN degree. It is 100% online with a practicum in NURS 4580 Community Health Nursing. This program option may be completed within two academic semesters, with 30 credit hours in residence at NC Central University.  Graduation requirement of 120 credit hours includes Advanced Placement Credit (61 credit hours), General Education Courses (37 credit hours) and Upper Division Nursing Courses (22 credit hours).

Applicants must:

• Meet the University Admissions requirements of 2.5 cumulative GPA in Associate’s Degree in Nursing. Upon acceptance, students may begin nursing courses in the Fall or Spring semester.
• Must have a valid, unrestricted RN NC license.

Program Notes:

• Students that have failed out of a Nursing program at another institution (this includes community colleges) are ineligible for admissions into the Nursing program.
• Students must complete math and science required courses with a “C” or better prior to admission to the nursing program.
• Three (3) failures in any math or science courses with a letter grade of D or F results in ineligibility for Nursing Admissions.

Curriculum Requirements

Nursing courses completed at other institutions are not accepted as transfer credits. Students who were not successful in other nursing programs are ineligible for admission to nursing at NC Central University. A cumulative GPA of 3.2 is required for admission to nursing.

1. 124 Semester Hours:

Students must complete a minimum of 124 semester hours with a cumulative average of 77 in all nursing courses. Students who are unsuccessful in a nursing course are dismissed from the Nursing program and may submit an appeal to the Nursing Department for readmission.

2. General Education Requirement:

Freshman and sophomore years:  complete General Education Curriculum required by the university as detailed on the four-year course of study.  Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 in math/science courses. Students may not repeat grades of C or better but may audit without credit.  All required Math/Science courses should be completed by the end of spring semester of the sophomore year.

All general education requirements must be complete prior to admission to the nursing program.
