PHYS 5070 - Electromagnetic Theory II (3) Prerequisites: PHYS 5060 . This course, the second of a two semester sequence intended for graduate students, covers the theory of time dependent electromagnetic fields. Topics covered include: propagation of plane electromagnetic waves in dielectric media, waveguides and resonant cavities, fields emitted from simple radiating systems, scattering and diffraction of electromagnetic waves, application of special relativity to the theory of electromagnetic fields, dynamics of relativistic particles and fields, collisions between moving charged particles, radiation from moving charges. Understanding of these topics is of critical importance to the study of high energy, nuclear and solid state physics. (Three hours lecture per week.).
