BIOL 4560 - Biochemistry I (3)

Prerequisites: All STEM majors must pass Organic Chemistry I with a grade of “C” or better; Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences majors must also pass BIOL 2220  with a “C” or better. All Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry majors must pass Organic Chemistry II with a “C” or better.   BIOL 4560 is an introductory comprehensive study of the physical and chemical properties of the four major classes of bio-molecules: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids, This course will adopt a modular pedagogical approach as recommended by the American Chemical Society (ACS), placing emphasis on chemical reactions and metabolic reactions to include compounds and living organisms. The three course module will be 1. Biological Equilibria and Thermodynamics, 2. Biological Structures and Interactions, and 3. Biological Reactions. The course will also include introductions to the biomedical implications and analytics of the formation and interactions of these bio-molecules. This course is cross-listed with CHEM 4500. (Three lecture hours per week).
