EASC 5240 - Minerals, Energy and Environment (3) Prerequisites: Entrance into the Earth Science M.S. program. Other participants made on a case by case basis. This is a graduate level introductory course into science of the processes responsible for the formation of economic-grade ore deposits and societal and environmental implications of their exploitation. Special emphasis will be placed on water-related impacts of energy production and current energy and mineral extraction related environmental issues in North Carolina, such as, among others, natural gas extraction by hydrofracking, regulation of coal combustion waste, and prospect of offshore drilling.
