The Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental and Geographic Sciences

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental and Geographic Sciences is designed to meet the educational needs of students seeking to develop skills in environmental, geographic and other earth sciences while promoting creation of new knowledge, sustainability, service to the community and environmental justice.  The 124 credit hour undergraduate degree program is structured into three concentrations, each with a focus on one region of a spectrum of human-environment interaction:  from an earth systems perspective (Geoscience concentration), through a discussion of pollution and other anthropogenic manipulation of the earth system (Environmental Science concentration), to a consideration of environmental effects on the human condition (EHAC* accredited concentration in Environmental Health Science).  The program core, to be taken by all majors, addresses the increasingly interdisciplinary skill set required of modern scientists by adopting a broad ‘Environmental Science’ foundation of coursework in each of the classifications traditionally defined in science education (Biology, Chemistry and Physics, along with additional emphasis on Earth Science).  This foundation is augmented with practiced consideration of the spatial patterns in both physical and social systems as is traditionally explored in the study of Geography, as well as exposure to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other modern geospatial technology.  The concentration in Environmental Health Science is accredited by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC).
