I. Admission Requirements


  • Two official, original, sealed transcripts of the student’s academic record from all institutions of higher education attended (undergraduate and graduate)
  • Two completed Applicant Evaluation / Recommendation Forms from two different individuals familiar with the applicant’s academic work (forms are provided with the application)
  • Official scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
  • The applicant’s statement of purpose (included in the graduate application form)
  • A writing sample of 7-10 pages demonstrating the applicant’s ability to write a critical literary analysis with appropriate MLA textual citation of sources

II. Program Requirements


Required Research Credits - 6 hours


Core Requirement - 9 hours


  • One course from American Literature (3)
  • One course from British Literature (3)
  • One course from Specialty/Multicultural Topics (3)

Additional Course Requirements - 15 hours


Five courses (15 credit hours) are required from the courses not taken as Core Requirement. The courses must be approved by the student’s academic advisor.  Three of those courses (9 hours) may be a minor drawn from another graduate level program at NCCU (subject to approval by the English program coordinator or Department chair.)

Foreign Language Requirements - 0-3 hours


May take a foreign language course or Successful completion of a reading proficiency examination in a foreign language

Total Credits - 30-33 hours


III. Exit Requirements


  1. A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  2. At least 30 semester hours of graduate level courses including the capstone project or thesis. Course details are provided below. 
  3. Successful completion of a comprehensive written examination.
  4. Successful completion of an oral examination associated with the thesis.
