Curriculum Requirements


The Bachelors of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies offers an alternative program of study for students whose objectives are not met by the university’s current majors.  The degree is especially attractive to students who are interested in designing individual programs that suit their educational and career goals or for students who wish to study a particular concentration through an interdisciplinary selection of courses. The program will allow students to master a core curriculum in IDS, as well as develop analytical, critical thinking and communication skills that will enhance their career opportunities.  

1. 120 Credit Hours:


Achieve a minimum grade point average of 2.0 overall with no grade lower than a “C” in any degree core or concentration course.  The last 30 hours must be completed at NCCU.

2. General Education Requirement:


Complete General Education Curriculum  required by the university.

3. Departmental/Program Requirements:


Non-departmental requirements (must have a grade of ‘C’ or better):


* Course may be used to fulfill a GEC Requirement

+ Course must be completed in addition to a GEC Requirement

Program requirements: Students must complete a total of 30 hours in Interdisciplinary (IDS) Core courses with grades of ‘C’ or better as follows:


A.  Required CORE Courses - 6 hours

INDS 2000 Introduction to Interdisciplinary Studies ( 3 )  (Required)

INDS   4000 Senior Seminar in Interdisciplinary Studies (Required)

B.  Complete additional 24 hours from the following list of courses for a total of 30 required hours in the Core:

4. Concentration Requirements


Students generate their concentration with the approval of the advisor.  They will select from courses in a thematic area to complete a total of 30 semester hours in the approved concentration with no more than 6 semester hours at each of 1000 and 2000 levels.  Must include 3-hour capstone course at the 4000 level.  Thematic options in this concentration may be, but are not limited to the following:

Peace Studies

Global Studies

Computer science

Business Administration

Social Science

Public Policy

Environmental Sustainability

Environmental Justice

Human Rights

5. Additional Requirements


General Electives:  Students must also complete 25 hours of general electives selected from the courses listed above (that are not used to meet concentration or core requirements) or as approved by their advisor.
