Curriculum Requirements

The Department of Music offers a strong, diversified undergraduate curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Music degree.  The Bachelor of Music is offered with concentrations in Music Education (with North Carolina licensure), Jazz, Instrumental Performance, Vocal Performance, Music Industry (Business and Media Communications tracks). The curriculum emphasizes thorough musical preparation, professionalism, and the development of appreciation of aesthetic diversity. Music studies at NCCU include research opportunities and internships with business and professional organizations.  Such opportunities help build the foundation for the student’s practical knowledge, employment prospects, and graduate study.

Instrumental or vocal audition required by Department of Music for degree program acceptance.

1. 120 Semester Hours:

Complete a minimum of 120 semester hours with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better. The last 30 hours must be completed at NCCU. Students must repeat ‘D’ and ‘F’ grades in major courses.

Complete General Education Curriculum  required by the university as detailed on the four-year course of study.

MUSL 3860 Acoustics and Introduction to Music Technology ( 3 ) 

MUSL 3920 Conducting ( 2 ) 

Music Electives (MUSL, APPL, or JAZZ) - 26 credits

Senior Recital (must accompany eighth semester of APPL 0XX1)

Program Notes:

Department of Music Major Ensembles for Instrumental Performance include: Marching Band; Symphonic Band; Jazz Ensemble; String Ensemble (orchestral string majors); Guitar Ensemble (guitar majors); Percussion Ensemble (percussion majors as assigned by applied instructor).
