Recreation Administration: Recreational Therapy Concentration, B.S.

Curriculum Requirements

The Recreational Therapy specialization is designed to prepare students to work with individuals with disabilities in positions in hospitals, institutions, parks and recreation programs, rehabilitation centers, and public schools. Recreational Therapy specialists are prepared in widely diversified program areas, such as art, sports, leisure education and counseling. They assist persons in making transition from institutions or schools to community recreation. Excellent practicum experiences are provided which translates theory into practice. This option culminates with a 560 hours/14-week internship, a practical work experience with expert supervision. The Program fulfills the requirements for licensure in Recreation Therapy established by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). Students will be prepared to sit for national certification exams and can become Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS).

1. 120 Semester Hours:

Complete a minimum of 120 semester hours with a cumulative grade point average of 2.25 or better. The last 30 hours must be completed at NCCU. Students must repeat ‘D’ and ‘F’ courses in major and non-departmental required courses.

2. General Education Requirement:

Freshman and sophomore years:  Complete the General Education Curriculum  required by the University as detailed on the four-year course of study. Students should complete all GEC courses by the end of the Sophomore year.  Students must have a ‘C’ or better in BIOL 1300 , BIOL 1610 , ENG 1110 , ENG 1210 , MATH 1110 , and PSY 2100 .

The National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) establishes the requirements for licensure in Recreational Therapy; current requirements include the successful completion of BIOL 1300 , BIOL 1610 , PSY 2100 , PSY 3100 , PSY 3310 , plus six credit hours of Human/Social Science electives.

Program Notes

Students who wish to major in the Recreation Administration Program must have an overall grade point average of 2.25 and apply to be admitted into the program.  Applicants must be at least a sophomore and have completed the following courses: RECR 1000 , RECR 2120 , and one additional 2000 level RECR course with a GPA average of 2.5 or better. Students are required to be senior status, have permission of their advisor, and have completed RECR 4625  prior to enrolling in the RECR 4635 .  Students must be in good standing and have passed all required courses prior to internship placement, which consists of a minimum 560-hour, 14 consecutive week field placement experience in recreation/leisure service agency under the supervision of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).
