I. Admission Requirements


Perspective students interested in the Master of Science in Physical Education or Recreation should hold a baccalaureate degree in a related field from an accredited institution.  GRE scores are NOT REQUIRED.  Applicants for admission to the graduate programs in physical education and recreation must follow the NCCU Graduate School admission procedures.

Certified by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC)


For those students who do not have a bachelor’s degree in recreational therapy/therapeutic recreation, they have to take the following courses in order to be able to be certified by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).

  • RECR 4140 - Program Design and Evaluation in Recreational Therapy (3 hours)
  • RECR 4143 - Assessment in Recreational Therapy (3 hours)
  • RECR 4145 - Facilitation Techniques in Recreational Therapy (3 hours)
  • PSY 3100 - Abnormal Psychology (3 hours)
  • PSY 3310 - The Psychology of Human Development and Maturation (3 hours
  • BIOL 1610 - Anatomy and Physiology (4 hours)

Elective Courses in the Recreation Administration Graduate Program Curriculum


All students must complete 33 credit hours.

Depending on which capstone option students choose, the number of electives will vary.  Students will be required to take the number of elective courses needed to reach 33 credit hours.  With the approval of the advisor, students may select elective courses not listed above.  Note:  Some of these courses are offered only Fall or Spring semester each year.  Students should check with the Graduate Coordinator of each program to assess availability of these approved courses.

III. Exit Requirements


  1. Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher is required.  Students must complete minimum of 33 hours of coursework including a Thesis for the M.S. with Thesis option and a minimum of 33 hours of coursework for the M.S. Non-Thesis option.
  2. Successful completion of a 6 credit hour Internship for the M.S. Degree Non-Thesis option.
  3. Successful completion of a Written Comprehensive Examination associated with the coursework.
  4. Admission to Masters Candidacy.
  5. Successful completion of an oral exam associated with the thesis and project.
