I. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
For an unconditional admittance the prospective student needs to have an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, preferably in a major focusing on their proposed area of concentration. Students with a cumulative GPA lower than 3.0, or who majored in another area may be considered for conditional admittance. Students must have a minimum of two letters of recommendation, preferably from current or former faculty who can evaluate the student’s ability to handle graduate work. Students must also submit a personal statement that discusses in detail why the individual wants to pursue an MS degree in Family and Consumer Sciences. Work and volunteer experience in the field is also evaluated. The Department of Human Science uses a rubric for evaluating each applicant and scores points for: overall GPA, Personal Statement, Letters of Recommendation, and Work, Volunteer, or Internship experience.
Concentration in Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS)
Professional Core - 12 hours
HDFS Concentration Courses - 15 hours
Cognate/Electives - 6 hours
Students are to take 6 hours of graduate-level elective courses, which can be in FCSG or other graduate departments, such as Counselor Education.
Non-Thesis Option (Internship) - 3 hours
Total Credit Hours in HDGS Concentration - 36 hours
Concentration in Textiles and Apparel (TA)
Professional Core - 12 hours
TA Concentration Courses - 12 hours
Twelve hours of textile and apparel concentration courses can be selected from the following list of courses. (Note that at least one course is offered each Fall and Spring semester on a rotating basis.)
Cognate/Electives - 6 hours
Students are to take 6 hours of graduate-level elective courses, which can be in FCSG or other graduate departments, such as Counselor Education.
Non-Thesis Option (Internship) - 3 hours
Total Credit Hours TA Concentration - 33 hours
Concentration in Nutritional Sciences (NS)
Professional Core - 6 hours
NS Concentration Courses - 18 hours
Elective - 6 hours
Any Counseling; Human Development; or Nutrition Elective
Internship - 3 hours
- FCSG 5850 - Internship (3) (requires 420 contact hours)*
*Students in the NS-RD track receive credit for their 6-hour dietetic internship. The additional 3 hours of internship credit counts toward the Elective requirement.
Total Credit Hours in NS Concentration - 33 hours
* Total Credit Hours in NS-RD Concentration - 27 hours
Exit Requirements
- A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher is required.
- Successful completion of at least 36 credit hours for either the Thesis or Non-Thesis options is required.
- Successful completion of a written Comprehensive Examination is required.
- Successful completion of a six-credit internship program project (FCSG 5850 ), including passing an oral exam is required.
Concentration in Nutritional Sciences for Continuing DIP Graduates (NS-DIP)
Professional Core - 6 hours
DIP Required Courses - 9 hours
Concentration Courses - 9 hours
Select any 3 Nutrition Concentration Courses:
Electives - 3 hours
Any Counseling; Human Development; or Nutrition Elective
Dietetic Internship - 6 hours
Total Credit Hours in DIP - 15 hours
Total Credit Hours in NS-DIP Concentration - 18 hours
Overall Credit Hours in NS Concentration - 33 hours
Exit Requirements
- Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher is required.
- Successful completion of at least 33 credits is required.
- Successful completion of a written Comprehensive Examination is required.
- Successful completion of a six-credit internship program project (FCSG 5810 ) is required.
