LSIS 5353 - Intro to Records Management (3)

An introduction to fundamentals of archival theory and functions, including the core archival domains: selection, appraisal, and acquisition; arrangement and description; reference services and access; preservation and protection; outreach, advocacy, and promotion; managing archival programs; and professional, ethical, and legal responsibilities. Emphasis on distinguishing key archival principles including respect for provenance, original order, authenticity, evidence, and value. Analysis of the role of records and archives in cultural memory and history including the formal, physical, and technical characteristics of records in a wide range or formats; and the nature of recordkeeping systems. Overview of how practice varies among business, government, and collecting archives.
